Marketing – Silica? Nano? Glass? Ceramic? Graphene?

26 January 2020

History Lesson

If you have been interested in car and automotive care for a while, many of these words will be familiar to you. Perhaps more than 15 years ago, we started to hear about glass coatings and nano coatings. They were a revolution. We were coming from the dark ages where your only choice of a wax, sealant or Last Stage Protection (LSP) product was difficult to use, gave little protection and was very short lived. But the answer was here. We had products which were super hydrophobic, they could last a year (some going as far as claiming upwards of two), they imparted a hardness to paint which made it almost impervious to damage – evidenced by many videos of coins being swipes/bashed/thrown against protected panels. It was a miracle, let us be in no doubt.

Time advances

Silica! Hooray for the next revolution. It offers super hydrophobic effects! Super hardness! Super durability!

Time advances, again

Ceramic! Hooray for the next revolution. It offers super hydrophobic effects! Super hardness! Super durability!

Time advances, yet again

Graphene! Hooray for the next revolution. It offers super hydrophobic effects! Super hardness! Super durability!

Are you starting to see a trend?!

Have we really moved that far forward?

Well, you could say that we now have ceramic shampoos, we have graphene waxes, we have silica detailers. we have it all. But does your ceramic shampoo give you 2 years of protection and 9H hardness? No chance. Does your silica detailer? No way. Do any of these contains *insert magic technology* actually do what the underlying technology could supposedly achieve?

Where does this take us?

So here we find ourselves. We are putting things into our products to meet buzz points. Are they really the form of the material which is so fab? Do we care? The marketeers do not. It’s a wet dream. They have an ever changing flow of buzz words to put into any literature that allows them to say that it is part of the revolution. But they aren’t.

PIP Chemicals Limited has been there since the start. We can make you a silica resin based coating. We can put some of that technology into a shampoo or a detailer but the inclusion of the term is only there to convince the end user – we won’t lie to you and say that our shampoo will give you 2 years of beading. We have genuine ceramic sealants. We can give you permanent protection. We can’t put it into your wax – the pre-ceramic will have become useless lumps of ceramic long before the user gets it. Same in a shampoo or detailer. We could just do it and tell you what you want to here. But that’s not what we are about.

So if you want a supplier who can give you the same performance – and beyond – as the super marketed products, but without trying to insult your intelligence with half truths, get in touch with us.
